Poli-Grip and Fixodent Zinc Poisoning

DENTURE CREAM MAY CAUSE ZINC POISONING

Over 30 million people wear dentures in the United States. Apparently, several types of denture cream products, including POLI-GRIP and FIXODENT, may pose a hazard to denture wearers. Denture cream containing zinc may create a copper deficiency in a person's body. If a denture wearer is suffering from unexplained weakness, numbness, loss of sensation or other nerve symptoms, or has been diagnosed with a condition called neuropathy, denture cream zinc may be the cause of the symptoms and health problems. Blood tests can determine whether a denture wearer with nerve problems has a zinc overdose.

Studies indicate that zinc poisoning or zinc overdose may result from the use of denture creams which contain zinc, including POLI-GRIP and FIXODENT. A recent study of zinc overdose, reported in the Journal “Neurology,” found that denture cream contains zinc, and chronic excessive use may result in copper deficiency and neurological disease. Apparently, stopping the use of denture cream with zinc results in improvement in most patients, but in some patients the relief was only mild.
